Julia Irons is a Teaching Fellow in the Department of Classics and in the College. Her research centers on Greek poetry, especially of the Archaic period, with particular focus on the relationship between poetic form and local historical context. In her current book project, Poetry in Place: Genres and Regional Traditions in the Greek Poetry of Aegean Anatolia, she argues that re-assessing traditional, Panhellenic genre classifications of three Archaic Greek poets (Sappho, Hipponax, and the composer of the Homeric Hymn to Aphrodite) yields new insights into their poetry, allowing us to frame it in terms of diverse local and regional literary histories. This project arises out of wider interests in the formation and dynamics of “tradition” in Greek poetry, and the relations (cultural, linguistic, political, and otherwise) between Greeks and their many neighbors, especially in western Anatolia.
