Congratulations to Emily Austin, whose book, Grief and the Hero: The Futility of Longing in the Iliad, has just been published by the University of Michigan Press. 

Jonathan Hall has received a grant from the Von Bothmer Publication Fund of the Archaeological Institute of America to offset publication expenses associated with his forthcoming book, Reclaiming the Past: Argos and its Archaeological Heritage in the Modern Era, to appear later this year with Cornell University Press.

Congratulations to Sofía Torallas-Tovar, who has been appointed to the Board of Directors of the American Society of Papyrologists.

We are delighted to welcome (back) Jonah Radding, who will start in September as Assistant Instructional Professor in Classics and Assistant to the Director of Undergraduate Studies. Jonah earned his PhD from the University of Chicago in 2016 for a dissertation entitled “Politics and Poetics: Tradition, Genre, and Poetic Innovation in Euripidean Tragedy,” which won the Dean’s Distinguished Dissertation Award from the Division of Humanities. A book, based on the dissertation, is currently under contract with the Center for Hellenic Studies in Washington DC.

Shadi Bartsch-Zimmer recently appeared on BBC Radio 4’s Start the Week, where she discussed her recently published translation of the Aeneid with Kirsty Wark. You can hear the episode here. Another guest on the program, the author and broadcaster Natalie Haynes, included Bartsch’s Aeneid in her pick for the Guardian’s Best Books of 2020, describing it as “terrific…fresh and pacy."

The Rhetoric & Poetics workshop hosted a live performance of Emma Pauly's (A.B. '16) translation of the Bacchae. This translation of Euripides' classic play centers a non-binary/gender non-conforming reading of Dionysus and roots itself in the worlds of gender, grief, and the family unit. Congratulations to Jenna Sarchio, who has been awarded a Mellon Foundation–University of Chicago Dissertation Completion Fellowship as well as a dissertation research award from the Elder Olson Fund of the Division of Humanities, which supports one student each year from across the division writing on the critical study of poetry and poetics.
