Publishing without Publishers: Book Circulation and Personal Networks in the ancient Mediterranean

This lecture explores change and continuity in the practices of literary composition and "publication," using case studies of Cicero, Pliny, Galen, Jerome, and Augustine to focus on the contrast between the variety of circumstances and habits we see in the late republic and early empire with those blossoming in the new terrain of writing and networking practices visible among the early Church Fathers.
